First things first. On the second day of our car rental, we got to the main event of the weekend - a trip to Playmobil-land near Nuremberg. We picked up our dear friends Kristyn and Irene first thing in the morning and got on the highway to Nuremburg. The trip took about 2 hrs and we were thrilled when we arrived at our destination. It didn't matter that it was cold and rainy. We were determined to have a great time. Here's Alex posing next to the opening gate.
And this is just inside the entrance.
The theme park cleverly combines life-size figures and installations of its toys, but for bad weather also provides a fantastic indoor playground. It was heaven for the 4-year olds and the grown-ups had a great time as well.
Our first stop was the pirate ship:
It was only reachable via the rope ladder in the foreground or by walking a plank across the water. Not for the faint of heart. The kids bounded across and explored the interior of the ship.
Kristyn then braved the chilly temps and rain to take a float across the water with Alex.
When it started to rain too much, we retreated inside to enjoy the incredible play areas full of all kinds of imaginable playmobil toys. I was struck by the fact that Alex chose to play primarily with the same toys he has at home.
But he also explored other areas:
At one of the stations, the kids could design and put together their own playmobil figure.
They also had a "cannon" shooting styrofoam balls at a pirate ship mock-up. That was right up Alex's alley.
And back in line to do it again...
Once the weather cleared up again, we ventured back outside. The kids milked "cows" at the farm,
and checked out the tractor.
Here is Alex paddling out onto a man-made lake. The boats were just there and the kids got in. No instructions or restrictions, no life vests etc. Exciting for the kids, nerve-wracking for parents.
and, of course, a castle!
complete with stockades.
We investigated dinosaur eggs, but talked about how dinosaurs and people did not coexist.
We even went inside a vulcano.
Kristyn even braved the water again, this time with a float that was not attached to a rope. (Again, note the lack of life vests.)
The day ended with a really fun and age-appropriate disco party. (You can see Alex in the lower right corner.)
We did stop in the store on our way out, of course, where Alex scored a viking ship! All in all a perfect day.
